Commerce Platform for Greek Retail Giant

The result

Ambitious Greek retailer Plaisio set out to launch a new omnichannel B2C e-commerce platform, aiming to better leverage digital marketing, personalization, and marketing automation. The goal: to secure a larger market share in their highly competitive industry, going head-to-head with players like MediaMarkt.

The platform went live during a major campaign, with around 2,000 active users at any given moment, nearly triple the usual average of 700. The new platform passed the test with flying colors. Black Friday 2019 also significantly outperformed previous years, with a notable increase in both online orders and revenue.

The launch itself reflected the high-pressure market Plaisio operates in: it took place during a large back-to-school campaign, which included many last-minute price changes. Once again, the new site performed flawlessly under pressure.

"Just like their extensive experience, Aviva's project approach matched our expectations perfectly."

The full-service approach: Think, Create, Evolve

As a Sitecore expert and Full-Service Digital Agency, we supported Plaisio throughout the entire process. Nearly all of our disciplines were involved: specification, infrastructure, architecture, configuration, integration, concept design, Sitecore development, frontend development, and the setup of the complete development environment, including regression and performance testing. We also trained Plaisio’s own developers, enabling them to work confidently and efficiently with their CMS.

We started with a combined analysis and onboarding week at Plaisio’s central distribution center just outside Athens. There, we examined the infrastructure, marketing systems, and application landscape the new platform needed to integrate with. We also assessed Plaisio’s workflows and explored their desired functionalities, design preferences, and implementation approach. This led to a well-defined backlog, the blueprint for the project.

We translated Plaisio’s requirements and user stories into a highly challenging set of technical demands. The implementation required extensive customization and deep changes, both within Mercury and Sitecore itself. Alongside the Greek developers from Plaisio, whom we trained for the project, designers from a UK-based agency also contributed to this international collaboration.

600.000 productkenmerken

600,000 attributes

We ran into the maximum number of product attributes that Sitecore could handle. Plaisio’s product catalog is so extensive that several product categories together required over a thousand product attributes, more than Sitecore was originally designed to support.

The solution Sitecore developed to accommodate this had a direct impact on the overall architecture, highlighting just how significant the required adjustments were.

The biggest challenge: a massive product catalog

Operating in an extremely competitive market, Plaisio had exceptionally high demands for its e-commerce platform, so high, in fact, that we had to push the limits of what was technically possible.

One major challenge was reaching the maximum number of product attributes Sitecore could handle. Plaisio’s product catalog is so extensive that certain product categories alone required over a thousand product attributes, more than Sitecore could support by default. The solution Sitecore developed to overcome this limitation impacted the overall architecture, underlining how substantial the required changes were.

Another example: to enable same-day campaign launches in Mercury, we had to go back to the drawing board. It was a far-reaching change, but one that made Mercury even more powerful as an accelerator for Sitecore.

By repeatedly pushing technical boundaries, we were able to further develop Mercury and tailor the Sitecore environment to meet Plaisio’s complex needs. And it’s not just Plaisio who benefits — these improvements now serve other clients as well.

A powerful platform with powerful tools: Sitecore and Mercury

When your ambitions are big and your requirements are high, only the best will do. Plaisio had already been in talks with Sitecore about a new commerce platform, primarily because of its strong personalization and marketing automation capabilities. They also saw Sitecore’s flexibility as a clear advantage over competing platforms. Alternatives like IBM WebSphere and SAP Hybris were considered, but both rely on separate modules that exchange data, making them more complex and significantly less flexible than Sitecore.

The only hesitation? Sitecore Commerce would have to be built entirely from the ground up, a major undertaking. That’s where Mercury, our proprietary Sitecore Commerce accelerator, made the difference. It drastically reduces the development time of a new e-commerce platform and comes with a suite of ready-to-use features such as wishlists, facet filtering, product comparisons, product bundles, and much more.

Combined with our proven commerce expertise, this was the deciding factor for the ambitious Greek retail giant, and why, on Sitecore’s recommendation, they chose to partner with us.

Plaisio valt in de prijzen tijdens E-vision 2023

“We’re very proud to be Plaisio’s strategic partner, and we see these awards as recognition for the great work we’ve done together. The fact that this is our fourth award-winning platform proves that our approach truly works.”

- Bart Hoppe, CEO of Aviva Solutions

How’s it going now?

The new platform performed exceptionally well from the start — and continues to be a powerful tool in supporting Plaisio’s business goals. At E-volution 2023, an annual event celebrating outstanding e-commerce best practices, Plaisio made a big impression. With 17 awards, they were the undisputed winner of the evening.

The next step? A full redesign of their B2B platform using a Composable architecture.
